Abstract Flooding is a recurring natural hazard in Assam, and the Morigaon district is among the most severely affected regions due to its geographical location along the Brahmaputra floodplains. Every year, intense monsoon rainfall and the overflow of rivers lead to widespread inundation, causing significant damage to human life, agriculture, infrastructure, and the local economy. This paper examines the major causes of floods in Morigaon district, including heavy rainfall, riverbank erosion, and inadequate drainage systems. It also analyzes the socio-economic and environmental impacts of floods, such as displacement of people, loss of crops and livestock, disruption of transportation and public services, and increased health risks. Furthermore, the study highlights government and community responses, including relief measures and disaster management efforts, while identifying key challenges in mitigation and rehabilitation. The paper emphasizes the need for sustainable flood management strategies, improved early warning systems, and community-based preparedness to reduce future flood vulnerability in Morigaon district.
