Title

POWER FLOW ANALYSIS OF AN IEEE 14-BUS SYSTEM FOR VARIOUS OPERATING CONDITIONS

Abstract

This paper focuses on the power flow analysis of the IEEE 14-bus system using ETAP software [6], with the objective of evaluating the system’s steady state performance under various operating conditions. The study utilizes the Newton Raphson method [4] due to its high accuracy and fast convergence capabilities for solving non-linear power flow equations [1]. The system is modelled in ETAP 19.0.1 with detailed specifications for buses, transmission lines, transformers and shunt capacitors [2]. Simulations are conducted under various operating conditions, which includes transformer tap changing and varying loads to observe their impact on voltage profiles at the buses. Additionally, shunt capacitors are introduced at weak buses to provide reactive power compensation and improve voltage stability [3][7]. The results show that the system can maintain nominal voltage levels under various operating conditions. The paper concludes that ETAP is a highly effective and versatile tool for power systems analysis [4]. By simulating various operating conditions, it is observed that voltage magnitudes at a majority of buses are improved and regulated within a ±5% tolerance from their nominal values [5]. Adjustments such as transformer tap changes and the addition of shunt capacitors plays a key role in enhancing voltage stability.
