Title

Memory, Displacement, and Home: The Postcolonial Diasporic Experience in Arundhati Roy and Jhumpa Lahiri’s Novels

Authors

Abstract

This research paper critically examines the postcolonial diasporic experience through the prisms of memory, displacement, and the concept of home in select novels by Arundhati Roy and Jhumpa Lahiri. Drawing upon key texts such as Roy’s The God of Small Things and Lahiri’s The Namesake and Interpreter of Maladies, the study explores how memory becomes both a source of pain and a bridge to cultural continuity for diasporic individuals. The dual burden of displacement—physical and psychological—creates a liminal space in which characters negotiate their identities amid fractured geographies and histories. By employing postcolonial theory and diaspora studies, this paper elucidates how the notion of home is rendered fluid and contested within the diasporic consciousness. Through close textual analysis and critical engagement with existing scholarship, the study reveals that both authors portray diasporic life as a perpetual negotiation between longing and belonging, shaped by personal history, cultural memory, and the realities of migration. Ultimately, Roy and Lahiri’s works challenge static notions of home and identity, offering nuanced insights into the complexities of the postcolonial diasporic condition.
