Title

Circuit Design and Calibration of a 1-Second Pulse Generator Using Quartz Clock Movement for Biosignal Applications

Abstract

When we talk about biomedical signal acquisition systems particularly periodic physiological signals such as heartbeat and respiration, it becomes crucial to have accurate timing control. This paper aims at presenting a design and experimental work for evaluation of a 1-second square wave pulse generator, constructed using analog components. However, due to certain electronic circuitry limitations, the actual output was seen deviating from the expected time interval. A quartz clock movement as a calibration standard was used to overcome this limitation, leveraging its long-term stability. The signals measured using an Oscilloscope confirmed the deviation in the assembled circuit and the stability of the quartz output. A detailed waveform comparison and pulse width analysis were conducted, including observations of overshoot and undershoot in the quartz signal. The proposed calibration methodology offers a low-cost, practical solution for improving timing precision in low-resource biosignal systems.
