THE ROLE OF ENGLISH LITERATURE IN LANGUAGE TEACHING AT UNDERGRADUATE LEVEL: A CONCEPTUAL ANALYSIS WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO NEP 2020 AND HIGHER EDUCATION IN ARUNACHAL PRADESH

Abstract

The National Education Policy 2020 has introduced major reforms in Indian higher education with emphasis on holistic development, critical thinking, communication skills and multidisciplinary learning. In today's context, undergraduate English education is critical. English literature has traditionally been employed as a medium for language teaching; even so, its role must be re-examined in the context of the new policy directives, particularly in regional institutions such as those in Arunachal Pradesh. This paper adopts a conceptual and policy-analytical approach to examine the role of English literature in language teaching at the undergraduate level with special reference to NEP 2020 and higher education in Arunachal Pradesh. Drawing on existing literature theories in language education as well as official policy papers, the study contends that literary texts have a major impact on linguistic competence, critical thinking, cultural awareness and value-based education. The report also explores the pedagogical consequences and regional problems of implementing literature-based language education in Arunachal Pradesh's undergraduate colleges.
