Title

A Review on Gomutra Bhavitam Jalkumbhi Bhasma and its Therapeutic Potential in the Management of Hypothyroidism

Abstract

Hypothyroidism is one of the most prevalent endocrine disorders worldwide and is broadly correlated in Ayurveda with conditions such as Galaganda, Gandamala, Medovriddhi, Kaphaja Shotha, and Rasapradoshaja Vikara. Classical Ayurvedic texts including Chakradatta and Bhaishajya Ratnavali describe Jalkumbhi Bhasma (from Pistia stratiotes) processed with Gomutra (cow urine) as a potential remedy for neck swellings and related Kapha-dominant disorders. This review summarizes the taxonomic identity and Ayurvedic pharmacology of Jalkumbhi, details the Masi Kalpana (carbonization) procedure for preparing Gomutra Bhavitam Jalkumbhi Bhasma, and outlines its proposed mode of action in hypothyroidism through Tridosha shamana, srotoshodhana, and possible regulation of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). Key practical aspects, such as selection and purification of raw materials, standard steps of carbonization, repeated Gomutra bhavana to enhance potency and bioavailability, recommended dosage (250–500 mg twice daily with honey or lukewarm water), and necessary precautions are also discussed. While the formulation is deeply rooted in Ayurvedic theory and pharmaceutics, the review highlights a critical need for systematic pharmacological, toxicity, and clinical studies to validate its safety, standardize preparation parameters, and objectively assess its efficacy in the management of Hypothyroidism.
