Recent archaeological investigations in the Marakanam region have revealed evidence of the ancient fortified port of Eyirpattinam, referenced in Sangam literature and identified as "Sopatna" in The Periplus. Located at the estuary of the Perungozhi River, this area demonstrates a continuous history of settlement. Surveys have identified a complex settlement pattern, including the Kollamedu habitation site and a newly discovered fortification at Kandadu. The Kandadu site contains a 9.60-acre circular fortress with a substantial moat, as well as Sangam-era Black-and-Red Ware and ring wells. These findings corroborate literary references to "Eyil" (fortified walls), affirming Marakkanam’s historical significance as a strategic maritime centre on the Coromandel Coast.
