Title

EMPLOYEMENT CONDITIONS OF CONSTRUCTION WORKERS- A CASE STUDY OF BRICK KILN WORKERS IN SALEM DISTRICT

Abstract

The construction sector is one of the major sources of employment in India, particularly within the unorganized segment where brick kiln workers constitute a vulnerable workforce. This study examines the employment conditions of brick kiln workers in Salem District with specific emphasis on the factors influencing their choice of occupation, awareness of welfare and safety measures, satisfaction with employment conditions, and the problems encountered at the workplace. A descriptive research design was adopted, and primary data were collected from 80 brick kiln workers using a structured questionnaire through convenience sampling. Statistical tools such as independent sample t-test, one-way ANOVA, and factor analysis were employed using SPSS version 27. The results indicate that demographic variables such as gender, age, community, education, and income significantly influence certain aspects of employment conditions, particularly satisfaction levels and problem perception. Factor analysis revealed five dominant dimensions of workplace challenges, namely personal, exterior, interior, material-related, and employment uncertainty problems. The findings highlight inadequate awareness of safety practices, wage dissatisfaction, and the absence of comprehensive welfare measures. The study underscores the urgent need for policy intervention, wage regulation, and strengthened social security mechanisms to improve the working conditions and livelihood security of brick kiln workers in the unorganized construction sector.
