Title

Accent Adaptation in Global English Communication: Intelligibility, Identity Negotiation, and Ethical Pedagogy in Multilingual Contexts

Abstract

The unprecedented global diffusion of English has transformed it into a lingua franca across educational, corporate, diplomatic, and digital domains. In multilingual contexts, communication increasingly occurs among speakers from diverse linguistic backgrounds rather than between native and non-native users. Within this framework, accent adaptation—often controversially labeled as accent neutralization—has gained prominence as a pedagogical and professional concern. This article reconceptualizes accent adaptation as a voluntary, intelligibility-oriented process rather than an attempt to erase linguistic identity. Drawing upon sociolinguistic theory, World Englishes scholarship, phonological research, and contemporary pedagogy, the study integrates theoretical discussion with qualitative case illustrations and classroom-based observations. It examines the relationship between pronunciation, identity, and power while proposing an ethical framework for pronunciation training. The findings suggest that intelligibility, suprasegmental awareness, and context-sensitive flexibility are more crucial than imitation of native norms. The article ultimately argues for an inclusive pronunciation pedagogy that respects multilingual competence while enhancing global communicative effectiveness.
