Odissi music constitutes one of the major classical music traditions of India, historically rooted in the ritual culture of Odisha and shaped by a continuous process of textual codification, temple practice, and regional aesthetics. Its evolution is closely associated with the liturgical traditions of the Jagannath Temple, where music functioned as an essential component of daily and seasonal rituals. Epigraphic sources such as the Hathigumpha Inscription of Kharavela provide early evidence of organized musical and performative practices in ancient Kalinga, suggesting a deep historical foundation for the region’s art traditions.
