Title

Micellar catalysed oxidation of D-xylose by N-bromosuccinimide

Abstract

This paper reports the results of kinetic study of micellar cationic CTAB (cetyltrimethylammonium bromide) catalysed oxidation of D-xylose by N-bromosuccinimide in aqueous acetic acid medium under first-order kinetic conditions with respect to oxidant. The Michaelis-Menten law is verified duo each with respect to D-xylose, and micellar catalyst in reaction. The hydrogen-ion dependence exhibits fraction-order kinetics. The kinetic data can be co-related with a proposed mechanistic pathway involving the intermediate complex (1:1) formation between reacting species HOBr and H2O+Br of oxidant and aldose which undergoes decomposition to give product. The influence of the pentose structure, on measured rate constants and effect of water molecule as proton abstracting agent supported on the overall reaction rate, are discussed.
