Title

EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE IN RELATION TO ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT OF HIGHER SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS

Abstract

This study explores the relationship between emotional intelligence (EI) and academic achievement among higher secondary school students in Krishna District, Andhra Pradesh, India. A stratified random sample of 1,000 intermediate students from 72 junior colleges was selected. EI was assessed using the Emotional Intelligence Inventory by Dr. S.K. Mangal and Mrs. Shubrah Mangal, while academic achievement was measured via aggregate annual examination marks. Descriptive and inferential statistics, including means, standard deviations, t-tests, ANOVA, and Pearson's correlation, were employed. Results indicated that 65% of students had average EI levels, 18% poor, and 17% good. Significant differences in EI were observed groups of study (MPC highest, F=16.64, p<0.05), type of college (private higher, t=9.65, p<0.01), and type of family (joint higher, t=3.66, p<0.05). A moderate positive correlation (r=0.38, p<0.01) was found between EI and academic achievement. The findings highlight the influence of demographic factors on EI and underscore the need for targeted interventions, such as EI training programs in schools, to enhance emotional competencies and scholastic performance, aligning with NEP 2020's emphasis on holistic education.
