Title

A CLINICAL STUDY ON THE EFFICACY OF KATI BASTI USING SAHACHARADI TAILA IN VATAJA GRIDHRASI

Abstract

• Abstract: Clinical Correlation of Gridhrasi and Sciatica Background: In Ayurvedic classics, Gridhrasi is categorized as one of the eighty Nanatmaja Vata Vikara (disorders caused exclusively by vitiated Vata). While Acharya Charaka and Vagbhatt emphasize its Vataja and Vata-Kaphaja subtypes, Acharya Sushruta details its pathogenesis within the Vatavyadhi Nidana. The disease is characterized by a specific radiating pain profile starting from the Sphik (hip) and extending through the Kati (waist), Pristha (back), Uru (thigh), Janu (knee), Jangha (calf), and Pada (foot). Clinical Correlation: The symptomatology of Gridhrasi—specifically Ruka (pain), Toda (pricking), Stambha (stiffness), and Muhuspandana (twitching)—presents a direct clinical correlation with Sciatica. Modern medicine defines Sciatica as a nerve compression syndrome where inflammation or mechanical pressure on the sciatic nerve causes debilitating pain along its dermatomal distribution. Therapeutic Intervention: Kati Basti, a localized external oleation therapy, serves as a cornerstone for managing these musculoskeletal and degenerative conditions. By applying lukewarm medicated oils to the lumbosacral region, the treatment directly addresses Vatadosha at its site of origin. Conclusion: Kati Basti offers an unparalleled non-invasive approach to relieving the pain and stiffness associated with Gridhrasi. It effectively targets the underlying inflammatory processes of the sciatic nerve, making it a potent alternative for managing degenerative spinal disorders.
