Abstract: Indian soil has remained fertile for plant-world in all times as also conducive for development of knowledgeable and precious lexicons. The Indian society, in past, has welcomed the invaders and homogenized with nature and social environment. There has been a doctrine since Vedic time to accept whatever is good without any discrimination and bias. This is amply reflected in various Vedas and lexicons developed in Mughal era. The present authors attempted to review the historical lexicons and various revelations to divulge elements of biodiversity encoded in them. It appeared that various plant species have been used for differ purposes such as: (i) food grains (09 species), (ii) edible fruits, (48 species), (iii) spices and condiments (19 species), (iv) perfumes (24 species), (v) oil-seeds (03 species) and (vi) for miscellaneous human needs (15 species). A total of 83 exotic plant species belonging to 73 genera and 60 families are gleaned from the said records. This account reflects man-plant relationships of Mughal era earmarking their economic potentials. It appears worth to invite Indian researchers paying attention to the foot-prints of botanical annals of past.
