Title

An Inventory on Animal-Based Sanskrit Plant Names And Their Significance

Abstract

Abstract: On account of systematization of plant names in Latin pioneered by the Swiss botanist Linnaeus, the beauty and glory of indigenous common or vernacular plant names has perforce been pushed on descending spirals. Of late, we are experiencing also the wave of investigations about indigenous or traditional knowledge systems. This latter trend will help suffice to regain the lost beauty and glory embedded in the indigenous or traditional knowledge. The present authors extended inventory of indigenous common plant names particularly coined after animal features. A total of 25 common Sanskrit plant names have been disclosed for the criteria of coining them. They are based on some animals, reptiles, birds and insects. Various plant features or parts such as leaves, roots, flowers, fruits, seeds, odour, and their sizes or beauty are compared with such parts or features from ambient faunal wealth. These are discussed relevantly in this communication. Such investigations can reflect the indigenous flora and fauna and the development of plant or animal sciences. The ancient Sanskrit literary sources are rich store-house of indigenous knowledge related to biodiversity and hence should be studied carefully for the welfare of mankind.
