Title

A Review on Ayurvedic Perspective of Madya (Alcohol): Therapeutic Significance, Physiological Effects, and Guidelines for Responsible Consumption

Abstract

Introduction: Alcohol (Madya) has been widely discussed in Ayurveda for its therapeutic and social implications. Ancient texts reference its use by deities and in traditional practices. This study explores the Ayurvedic perspective on alcohol, including its classification, properties, and guidelines for responsible consumption. Methods: A comprehensive literature review used classical Ayurvedic texts, including Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita. The analysis focused on the six trikas (key factors) of alcohol consumption, its effects on doshas, and dietary considerations for safe intake. Results: Findings indicate that alcohol, when consumed according to Ayurvedic principles, can have therapeutic benefits. Proper selection based on an individual's prakriti (body constitution) and suitable food choices can minimize adverse effects. The three stages of intoxication, along with their physiological impacts, are also outlined. Discussion: Aligning Ayurvedic guidelines with modern lifestyles can help in making informed choices regarding alcohol consumption. Understanding the gunas (qualities) of different types of Madya and their interaction with seasonal and dietary factors is essential for safe and beneficial use. Conclusion: Ayurveda offers a structured approach to alcohol consumption, emphasizing moderation and personalization tailored to individual constitution and environmental factors. Integrating these principles can balance their effects while minimizing health risks.
