Title

Challenges faced by teachers in implementing Sustainable Practices in School Education

Abstract

The United Nations (UN) Agenda 2030 has set forth 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to be achieved within the next seven years. One of these goals is “Responsible Consumption and Production”. But the recent rise of Consumerism at every stage of life has disrupted habits for a harmonious and equitable consumption pattern that can hardly sustain the future needs of the planet. Teachers are often the flag bearers when it comes to giving exposure to sustainable practices to our future generation. In the milieu of school education, integrating sustainable practices into the class is vital for fostering a sense of environmental responsibility and preparing students to become active contributors to a sustainable future. However, enforcing sustainable practices in school education comes with its own set of challenges, as schools are also not untouched from the phenomenon of Consumerism. This research study aims to explore the challenges faced by elementary school teachers in implementing strategies for sustainable practices in promoting "Responsible Consumption and Production" in the field of school education. It will be a qualitative-based study, using semi-structured interviews for data collection. The sample will correspond to elementary school teachers, and then a thematic-based analysis will be done. The significance of this exploratory study lies in its ability to identify the challenges teachers face in implementing sustainable practices and to propose strategies to overcome them. By creating an enabling environment that supports teachers, we can foster a sense of environmental responsibility among students and prepare them to become active contributors to the Noble SDGs for the coming United Nations Agenda 2030.
