Title

Marginalised Voices in Literature: A Quest for Representation and the Legacy of Wilfy Rebimbus

Authors

Abstract

This paper examines the representation of marginalized voices in literature through a comparative reading of Romantic poetry and the works of Konkani poet Wilfy Rebimbus. Literature has historically reflected dominant social structures, often sidelining the experiences of the oppressed and economically disadvantaged. However, certain literary traditions, particularly Romantic poetry, have sought to restore dignity to the lives of ordinary people. By analysing selected works of Romantic poets such as William Blake, John Keats, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and Robert Burns, the paper highlights how poetry becomes a powerful medium for articulating the struggles, emotions, and aspirations of marginalized individuals. The study then draws parallels with the poetry of Wilfy Rebimbus, whose works portray the lived realities of Konkani-speaking labourers, migrant workers, and socially neglected individuals. Through poems such as Pedru Zunvavn, Ganv Amcho, and Bahraingarachi Maim, Rebimbus foregrounds themes of poverty, migration, longing for home, and human dignity. By placing Rebimbus within a broader literary framework that includes Romantic humanism and social empathy, the paper argues that his poetry extends the Romantic legacy of advocating for the voiceless. Ultimately, the study demonstrates that literature functions not only as an aesthetic expression but also as a vehicle for social awareness, empathy, and representation of marginalized communities.
