Title

Nasya Karma: Bridging Ayurveda and Intranasal Drug Delivery for Targeted Therapy

Authors

Abstract

Nasya Karma, a therapeutic procedure described in Ayurveda, involves the administration of drugs through the nasal route for the management of Urdhwanga disorders. The present study explores the scientific basis of Nasya in relation to modern intranasal drug delivery systems. The nasal cavity, with its rich vascularity and neural connections, facilitates rapid drug absorption and potential direct access to the central nervous system. Factors such as lipophilicity, bio-adhesiveness, and particle size influence drug absorption and efficacy. Classical concepts like “Nasa hi Shiraso Dwaram” are supported by modern anatomical and pharmacological evidence. Thus, Nasya Karma can be considered an effective and promising approach for targeted drug delivery, particularly in the management of head and neurological disorders.
