Water quality in industrial regions is increasingly deteriorating due to rapid industrialization and urbanization, affecting both groundwater and surface water resources. Kakinada, being a prominent industrial hub, has limited studies addressing the combined impact of industrial activities on both groundwater and surface water, indicating a significant research gap. The present study aims to assess the quality of groundwater and surface water in industrial areas of Kakinada and to evaluate the influence of industrial activities on water suitability for various uses. Water samples were collected from selected locations and analyzed for key parameters, including physical parameters such as pH; chemical parameters such as nitrates, chlorides, alkalinity, total hardness, total dissolved solids (TDS), ammonia, fluoride, and iron (Fe); and bacteriological contamination using the H₂S strip test. The overall water quality was evaluated using the Water Quality Index (WQI) calculated by the Weighted Arithmetic method, which integrates multiple parameters into a single value for effective interpretation. The findings of this study provide a comprehensive understanding of the impact of industrial activities on water quality and offer useful insights for sustainable water resource management in the study area.
