Kakajangha, botanically identified as Peristrophe bicalyculata (Retz.) Nees, is an important medicinal plant described in Ayurveda. Classical texts highlight its use in managing disorders such as fever, skin diseases, wounds, insomnia, and poisoning, along with its role in balancing Kapha and Pitta doshas. Various Nighantus detail its synonyms, properties, and therapeutic actions, while traditional formulations employ its root, leaves, and whole plant. Modern pharmacological studies substantiate these claims, demonstrating antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antioxidant, anticonvulsant, antihypertensive, and neuroprotective activities. Phytochemical investigations reveal the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, sterols, and essential oils contributing to its bioactivity. Toxicological studies indicate safety at therapeutic doses. Despite historical controversy regarding its botanical identity, Peristrophe bicalyculata is now widely accepted as the authentic source. The integration of classical knowledge with contemporary research underscores Kakajangha’s potential as a valuable therapeutic agent and highlights the need for further clinical validation and standardization.
