Title

Effect of EMS and Sodium Azide on Leaf Morphology in Soybean Variety JS-335

Abstract

The present study conducted to evaluate the effect of chemical mutagens on leaf morphological changes in soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) variety JS-335 in the M₁ generation. Seeds were treated with different concentrations of Ethyl Methane Sulphonate (EMS) and Sodium Azide (SA). The treated populations were assessed for variations in leaf morphology. A wide range of morphological changes such as unifoliolate, bifoliolate, and quadrifoliolate leaves, along with alterations in leaflet size, shape, and margins, were observed. Both mutagens showed dose-dependent effects on the frequency of morphological variations. The highest frequency of leaf abnormalities (21.83%) was recorded in SA at 0.02%, followed by EMS at 0.10%. The results indicate that EMS and SA are effective in inducing genetic variability in soybean. These induced variations may be useful in mutation breeding programs for the development of improved soybean varieties.
