Title

AI and the Folk Art of India: Opportunities, Challenges, and the Debate on Replacement

Abstract

As expressions of communal memory, celebration and story-telling, India's folk art preserves and interprets the country's rich cultural heritage. Many aspects of social identity, ecological knowledge, oral storytelling and ceremonial rituals are shared by art traditions such as Patachitra, Gond, Warli and Madhubani. Folk art is an excellent way to preserve the traditions and knowledge of the local people. It often follows location-specific forms of expression and is taught informally. The only problem facing traditional creative activities today is marketing, internationalization and decreasing investments for them, all of which threaten their very existence. One way AI is constantly changing the traditional creative process is by adding new opportunities but also bringing damage. One of these developments is the use of computer programmes powered by artificial intelligence that are able to examine photographs, copy artistic styles and even make an entirely new picture from a single old one. These are the findings of a study published in the journal. Institutional frameworks such as the cultural heritage and AI project at UNESCO show how new technology can both save endangered practices and offer invaluable artifacts to the public.AI-manufactured works of art present a variety of questions concerning cultural legitimacy, ownership and morality. The artistic merit of AI, such as its lack of emotional content, social symbolism and cultural significance which are greatly valued in more traditional forms of art - obscures the fact that it is genuine art. It is difficult to protect communities' intellectual property rights in artwork because customary law is not clear. However, the wealth of ideas it generates can be problematic for craftspeople who have earned their livelihood selling things ,people need helping others while seeking sustenance. Artificial intelligence (AI) and Indian traditional art takes a middle path. That is the first half of our discussion. This article examines at length the sort of functions which AI can perform today as allies of craftsmanship: research, preservation of traditional skills, practical design work. Next, we look at the moral, social and economic effects of this new technology. But scientific studies have shown that AI is still not as good as humans when it comes to originality, cultural relevance and experiential knowledge. But AI can make things look like folk art. If we don't come up with a clear plan that shows AI as a helpful tool instead of a replacement for us, traditional artisans will have a big problem. The report emphasized the necessity for new kinds of community-oriented, ethical participatory and technologically advanced preservation frameworks to be developed. It is possible that technical progress and the preservation of cultural traditions in the current digital era may be achieved via a paradigm shift towards AI that respects the autonomy, knowledge and rights of traditional craftsmen.
