Title

Hemingway Code Hero : Internal Struggle, Existential Anxiety, and a lack of Emotional Connect

Authors

Abstract

This study investigates the evolution of Ernest Hemingway’s protagonists portrayed in his four important novels written at the different stages of his life. These protagonists are Jake Barnes in The Sun Also Rises (1926), Frederic Henry in A Farewell to Arms (1929), Robert Jordan in For Whom the Bell Tolls (1939) and Santiago in The Old Man and the Sea (1952). The study is based on the assumption that these Hemingway heroes represent the true concept of a code hero evolved in course of time. The paper affirms the fact that Hemingway heroes, though, appear masculine, but they are torn inside, and suffer from internal trauma, existential anxiety and a lack of emotional connect in their personal life. This research dwells into Hemingway’s stand that masculinity is not an exterior facade, it is the capacity to endure physical and emotional strain.
