Title

Birth Order as a Predictor of Self-Actualizing Tendencies in Young Adults

Authors

Abstract

Birth order has long been considered an important factor influencing personality development and individual behaviour within family systems. This research paper examines birth order as a predictor of self-actualization tendencies among young adults. Self-actualization, a central concept in humanistic psychology, refers to an individual’s motivation to realize their full potential, develop personal capacities, and pursue meaningful goals. The study adopted a quantitative correlational research design to explore whether birth order is associated with differences in self-actualization tendencies. A sample of young adults aged 18–25 years was selected using convenience sampling. Data were collected through a demographic information sheet to identify birth order and a standardized self-actualization scale to assess participants’ level of self-actualization tendencies. In addition, a small number of participants were randomly selected to complete a qualitative questionnaire consisting of descriptive questions about their experiences, motivations, and perspectives on personal growth. Basic statistical analysis was used to examine relationships and group differences. It was observed that variations in birth order may be associated with certain differences in self-actualization tendencies, highlighting the potential influence of family structure and early life experiences on personal development during young adulthood.
