Title

Algorithmic and High Frequency Trading in Emerging Markets: Implications for Sustainable Growth in Indian Capital Markets

Abstract

Algorithmic and high frequency trading (HFT) have transformed financial markets, enhancing efficiency, liquidity, and speed. Yet, their impact on the long term, sustainable development of capital markets especially in emerging economies like India remains theoretically under explored. This paper develops a compact conceptual framework examining how algorithmic and HFT practices influence the conditions for sustainable growth in Indian capital markets. Drawing on institutional theory, behavioural finance, and sustainability oriented governance, it argues that trading speed and automation shape market structure, investor behaviour, and stability, either reinforcing short term speculation or supporting long term, fundamentals based investment. The paper highlights tensions between market efficiency, speculative intensity, and the goals of inclusive, resilient, and ESG aligned markets. It also proposes a normative framework linking algorithmic trading to fair access, systemic risk, and environmental social considerations, offering a focused lens on how HFT can be governed to support not erode the long term growth and integrity of Indian financial markets.
