India is endowed with rich biodiversity and as also ancient heritage literary scriptures. The present author peeped into the Sanskrit scriptures viz., Charak, Sushrut and Astanga Samhitas. The plant species mentioned by Sanskrit plant names possess some peculiar useful properties. These are gauged and unlocked from them. The plant parts such as leaves (56), stem-axes (02), underground parts (07), flowers (22) and fruits (06) have been limelighted as suitable for human consumption. The figures in parenthesis denote number of species. These use-reports are compared with the recent ethnobotanical literature to pinpoint hitherto unreported utilities. Such plant species constitute additional bioresources for welfare of mankind and his happiness. It is, therefore, appealed that the ancient Indian Sanskrit scriptures should be investigated to unearth the hidden treasure of useful plant species.
