Title

ROLE OF BASTI IN REGULATING GUT MICROBIOME, INTESTINAL FLORA AND GUT BRAIN AXIS.

Abstract

ABSTRACT The human gut microbiome is a complex, dynamic consortium comprising trillions of microorganisms—including bacteria, fungi, and viruses—primarily localized within the large intestine. This microbial ecosystem plays a pivotal role in host homeostasis by modulating metabolic pathways, reinforcing the intestinal epithelial barrier, and regulating immune responses. Emerging evidence suggests that the gut-brain axis (GBA) serves as a bidirectional communication network where microbial metabolites influence neurological function and behaviour. Dysbiosis, or microbial imbalance, is increasingly linked to inflammatory, metabolic, and neuropsychiatric disorders. This article explores the therapeutic role of Basti (medicated enema) in Ayurvedic medicine as a microbiome-targeted intervention. By examining the physiological mechanisms of endocolonic, encolonic, and diacolonic actions, we evaluate how Basti restores microbial harmony, enhances nutrient synthesis, and modulates the enteric nervous system to support systemic and neurological health.
