Title

A COMPREHENSIVE REVIEW OF KAUMARBHRITYA KALPAS IN YOGARATNAKARA SAMHITA: PHARMACOLOGICAL DYNAMICS, SAFETY PROFILES, AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE IN MODERN PEDIATRICS

Abstract

Background: Kaumarbhritya (Ayurvedic Pediatrics) requires specialized therapeutic approaches due to the inherent physiological fragility (Sukumaratva) and immature tissue status (Aparipakwa-Dhatu) of pediatric patients. "Yogaratnakara Samhita" (17th century CE) serves as a milestone clinical compendium that effectively bridges classical Ayurvedic doctrines with highly practical, low-dose, high-potency formulations (Kalpas), including sophisticated herbo-mineral nano-crystalline preparations (Rasaushadhis). Aim: To critically evaluate and systematically prioritize the classical pharmacodynamics, multi-targeted mechanisms, safety profiles, and contemporary pediatric relevance of the core formulations detailed in the Balaroga Chikitsa section of "Yogaratnakara Samhita". Materials and Methods: A comprehensive literary review of the Balaroga chapter of "Yogaratnakara" was coupled with a systematic search of contemporary scientific literature across electronic databases including PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, and the DHARA portal up to 2026. Iconic formulations—specifically Balachaturbhadra Churna, Kumarakalyana Rasa, Aravindasava, and Saraswata Ghrita—were evaluated for their phytochemical, toxicological, and clinical evidence. Review Findings: The selected Kalpas demonstrate a sophisticated network pharmacology tailored to children. Balachaturbhadra Churna provides dual anti-secretory and bronchodilatory actions. Kumarakalyana Rasa safely upregulates immunoglobulins (IgG/IgM) via biocompatible nano-structures without hepatorenal toxicity. Aravindasava optimizes the gut-brain axis to treat functional dyspepsia, while ssthe lipophilic nature of Saraswata Ghrita facilitates transport across the blood-brain barrier to enhance neuroplasticity. Furthermore, classical vehicles (Anupana) like honey and breast milk function as kinetic adjuvants that mask taste and accelerate mucosal absorption. Conclusion: The pediatric formulations in "Yogaratnakara" offer a scientifically validated blueprint for safe, child-friendly, and effective therapeutics. Standardizing these polyherbal and herbo-mineral matrices provides a scalable pathway to integrate time-tested Ayurvedic strategies into mainstream global pediatric care.
