Fish farming has emerged as an important source of livelihood, income and nutritional security for rural households in Assam. This study examines the problems and prospects of fish farmers in the Rangia Agricultural Sub-Division of Kamrup district, Assam. The study is based on primary data collected from 125 fish farmers selected through a multi-stage random sampling method from five ADO circles. Quantitative data were supplemented by observation, focus group discussions and relevant secondary sources. The findings reveal that fish farming plays a significant role in employment generation and household income. However, farmers continue to face serious challenges, particularly inadequate credit facilities, lack of storage infrastructure, high feed costs, flood damage, shortage of quality fish seed, limited technical knowledge and marketing problems. Despite these difficulties, the future of fish farming remains promising, with 64.8% of respondents expressing a positive outlook. The continued dependence of the region on imported fish also indicates considerable scope for increasing local production. The study therefore emphasizes the need for improved institutional credit, scientific training, better extension services, local hatchery development, storage facilities, aquaculture insurance and stronger market linkages to make fish farming more sustainable and profitable for rural communities.
