Abstract
Start-ups have emerged as an important component of India's contemporary economic development process. Over the last decade, India has witnessed rapid growth in entrepreneurial activity, supported by digitalisation, technological innovation, increasing access to finance, expanding consumer markets and government initiatives promoting entrepreneurship. Start-ups are contributing to employment generation, innovation, productivity improvement, regional development and the creation of new markets. They are also transforming traditional sectors such as agriculture, education, healthcare, financial services, retail, transportation and logistics through technology-based business models. The development of the start-up ecosystem has created opportunities not only for highly skilled professionals but also for entrepreneurs, freelancers, service providers and workers associated with emerging businesses. Government programmes such as Startup India, digital infrastructure initiatives, incubators, accelerators and various financing mechanisms have further strengthened the entrepreneurial environment. However, start-ups also face several challenges, including access to finance, regulatory compliance, intense competition, shortage of specialised skills, market uncertainty and difficulties in achieving long-term sustainability. This article examines the role of start-ups in employment generation and economic development in India. It analyses their contribution to entrepreneurship, innovation, investment, employment, digital transformation and inclusive growth. The study also identifies major challenges and suggests policy measures to create a more sustainable and employment-oriented start-up ecosystem.
