The present study attempts to determine the type of rural settlements in the twelve districts of Himachal Pradesh. The mountainous terrain of the state of Himachal Pradesh is assumed to provide an excellent example of physical control of landscape on the development of human settlements with particular reference to rural settlements. Bernard Method (1931) has been applied to determine the type of rural settlements in the districts. The type of rural settlements can be compact, semi-compact, semi-sprinkled and dispersed. Deterministic control of physical landscape is quite clearly visible through the existence of dispersed nature of rural settlements in almost all the districts. But possibilistic tendencies are also observed in a few Community Development (C.D.) blocks of some districts through the existence of compact type of rural settlements.
