Title

THE LONG-TERM IMPACT OF AI TOOLS ON CRITICAL THINKING, MEMORY RETENTION, AND COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT OF HIGHER EDUCATION STUDENTS

Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become an important educational technology that is transforming teaching and learning practices worldwide. AI-powered tools such as generative AI chatbots, intelligent tutoring systems, and adaptive learning platforms provide personalized learning experiences, instant feedback, and easy access to information. While these technologies offer significant educational benefits, concerns have emerged regarding their long-term impact on students' critical thinking, memory retention, and cognitive development. This study aims to examine the long-term cognitive effects of AI-assisted learning through a qualitative literature review. The study analyses seven peer-reviewed research papers published between 2024 and 2026 that investigate the relationship between AI usage and student cognitive outcomes. The selected studies were examined using thematic analysis, focusing on critical thinking, memory retention, cognitive development, learner autonomy, and cognitive offloading. The findings indicate that AI can enhance student engagement, academic performance, reasoning, and problem-solving skills through personalized learning support. However, excessive reliance on AI may reduce independent thinking, critical evaluation, memory retention, and active learning. The review also highlights concerns regarding cognitive offloading, where students increasingly depend on technology rather than their own memory and reasoning abilities. The study concludes that AI can positively support learning and cognitive growth when used responsibly and in moderation. However, balanced AI integration is essential to ensure that technology complements rather than replaces human thinking. Further longitudinal research is needed to better understand the long-term cognitive effects of AI on students.
