Title

Adharājan Ki Haryanvi Saang-Shaili Raganian: Pingal Shastra Evam Lok-Sanskritik Pariprekshya Mein Ek Vishleshanatmak Adhyayan (Ragni 9–16 Ke Sandarbh Mein)

Abstract

This study presents a focused analytical examination of the Haryanvi Saang-style Rāgaṇīs in the poetic work Adharājan by Anand Kumar Ashodhiya, interpreted through the dual frameworks of Pingal prosody and folk-cultural hermeneutics. Concentrating on Rāgaṇīs 9–16, the research explores how indigenous metrical structures, performative conventions, and socio-political narratives converge to generate a distinctive literary-oral aesthetic within North Indian folk traditions. Situated within the Haryanvi Saang tradition—a performative folk theatre integrating music, dialogue, and narrative—the study employs a qualitative, text-centric methodology to analyse mātrā-structure, yati-division, and tukānt patterns. The findings reveal a flexible yet systematic adherence to Pingal principles, characterized by metrical ranges of 24–30 mātrās and dominant yati patterns such as 6+6+6+6 and 6+8+8+6. Unlike rigid classical metrics, these compositions demonstrate adaptive prosody aligned with performative delivery and audience engagement. Thematically, the selected Rāgaṇīs foreground the interplay of power, gender, morality, and राजनीति through historically inflected narratives. The character of Raskapoor exemplifies emergent female agency within feudal structures, while Krishna Kunwari and Fateh Kanwar articulate contrasting paradigms of sacrifice and सत्ता-संघर्ष. The study further highlights the role of refrain (tek) as a rhythmic and semantic anchor, alongside the use of anuprāsa, rūpaka, and layered imagery that enhance mnemonic retention and performative impact. It concludes that the Rāgaṇīs of Adharājan represent a dynamic confluence of classical prosody and folk poetics, functioning as repositories of cultural memory and contributing significantly to Indian literary, folkloric, and performance studies.
