Title

Wetland Birds as Bioindicators of Ecological Health: Conservation Significance of Ujani Reservoir, Maharashtra, India

Abstract

Wetlands are sensitive ecosystems and changes in water availability, habitat condition, pollution and human activities can affect their biological communities. Birds are closely associated with wetland habitats and can provide useful information about changes in ecological conditions. Ujani Reservoir in Solapur District, Maharashtra, supports a variety of resident and migratory wetland birds and contains different habitats such as open water, shallow water, mudflats, marshes and surrounding agricultural areas. The present paper discusses the use of wetland birds as indicators of ecological condition and the conservation importance of Ujani Reservoir based on published information. Earlier studies have reported considerable aquatic-bird diversity from wetlands associated with the reservoir, including resident, migratory and resident-migratory species. Differences in bird distribution and habitat use have been related to water availability, food resources, habitat conditions and human interference. Sand mining, fishing, livestock grazing, agricultural runoff, tourism, vehicular movement, habitat encroachment, water extraction and solid-waste disposal are among the pressures reported around the reservoir. These activities may affect habitats used by wetland birds. Regular monitoring of bird communities along with habitat conditions and human activities can help in assessing changes in the wetland. Protection of important bird habitats and reduction of unnecessary disturbance are therefore important for maintaining the ecological value of Ujani Reservoir.
