Title

Evaluation of Hepatoprotective Activity of Herbal Extract Against Paracetamol-Induced Toxicity

Abstract

Paracetamol-induced hepatotoxicity is one of the most widely used experimental models for evaluating hepatoprotective agents. The present study aimed to evaluate the hepatoprotective activity of a standardized hydroalcoholic extract of Psidium guajava leaves against paracetamol-induced liver toxicity in Wistar rats. Hepatotoxicity was induced by administering paracetamol (2 g/kg, p.o.). The extract was evaluated at two dose levels (200 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg). Silymarin (100 mg/kg) was used as the standard hepatoprotective drug. Biochemical parameters including serum glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase (SGOT), serum glutamate pyruvate transaminase (SGPT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), total bilirubin, total protein, and histopathological studies were performed. Results showed that treatment with the herbal extract significantly (p < 0.01) reduced elevated liver enzyme levels and improved histopathological architecture compared to the toxic control group. The hepatoprotective effect at 400 mg/kg was comparable to that of silymarin. The study concludes that Psidium guajava leaf extract possesses significant hepatoprotective activity against paracetamol-induced hepatotoxicity.
