Title

Artificial Intelligence Adoption in Small and Medium Enterprises: Evidence from North America

Abstract

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are a significant element of economic development in North America, but many of these SMEs are limited by structural barriers impeding them from adopting emerging technologies. This study assesses artificial intelligence (AI) adoption among SMEs located in the U.S. and Canada and investigates the impact of AI adoption on productivity and revenue growth. Using a quantitative research design with secondary data sources across both countries, this study analyzes datasets collected from major institutional sources, which include government statistics, and international reports on digitalization, between 2019 and 2026. Descriptive, comparative correlation, and regression analyses were performed using SPSS to determine the relationship between AI adoption and firm performance. The study finds a strong positive relationship between AI adoption and SME productivity and revenue growth, and that generative AI plays a crucial role in driving the digital transformation of small and medium-sized enterprises. However, SMEs continue to face significant barriers to the widespread implementation of AI technologies such as financial constraints, limited technology infrastructure, and a lack of skilled labour. This study offers empirical evidence regarding performance improvements as a result of AI adoption in SMEs, and makes recommendations for policy and strategy to accelerate the digital transformation of small and medium-sized businesses in North America.
