The memoryless property is a fundamental concept in probability theory, reliability engineering, and stochastic processes. Among continuous probability distributions, only the exponential distribution satisfies the exact lack of memory property. However, many practical systems such as communication networks, manufacturing equipment, healthcare systems, and transportation networks exhibit failure behaviors that deviate from this ideal assumption. To model these situations more accurately, researchers introduced the Almost Lack of Memory (ALM) property, which generalizes the exponential distribution while preserving many of its desirable mathematical characteristics. This review discusses the theoretical foundation of ALM distributions, their mathematical representation, periodic failure rate functions, applications in unreliable service systems, periodic Poisson processes, parameter estimation techniques, limiting properties, and practical applications in engineering and data science. The paper also highlights future research opportunities in reliability modelling and stochastic process analysis.
