Title

Assessment Accommodations for Children with Special Needs

Authors

Abstract

Assessment accommodations are an important component of inclusive and equitable education for children with special needs. Standard assessment procedures may create barriers for some learners because of differences in communication, sensory functioning, physical access, attention, processing, reading, writing, or other individual needs. Assessment accommodations involve appropriate changes in the presentation, administration, setting, timing, response method, or use of assistive technology to provide learners with a fair opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and skills. Common accommodations may include accessible print or digital materials, visual supports, additional time, scheduled breaks, alternative response methods, communication supports, appropriate seating arrangements, and assistive technologies such as screen readers, magnification tools, speech-to-text, or communication devices. The selection of accommodations should be individualized and based on the child's functional needs, regular learning practices, assessment purpose, and educational goals. Collaboration among general teachers, special educators, parents, audiologists, psychologists, speech-language professionals, therapists, and other relevant professionals can strengthen accommodation planning and implementation. Accommodations should preserve the intended purpose of the assessment and should not automatically lower learning expectations. Continuous observation and progress monitoring are also necessary to determine whether an accommodation is effective and whether modifications are required. When appropriately planned and implemented, assessment accommodations can reduce unnecessary barriers, improve accessibility, support accurate demonstration of learning, and promote participation and inclusion. Thus, accessible and individualized assessment practices play an important role in supporting the educational progress, independence, and holistic development of children with special needs.
