Title

Slab waterproofing

Abstract

Slab waterproofing is an essential part of building construction that protects reinforced cement concrete (RCC) slabs from water leakage, dampness and deterioration. In buildings, water leakage commonly occurs due to cracks in concrete, improper drainage, inadequate slope, poor workmanship, defective joints and improper treatment of pipe penetrations. These problems can cause corrosion of steel reinforcement, damage to plaster and paint, fungal growth, reduced durability and increased maintenance costs. The main objective of this project is to study the causes of slab leakage and understand the different waterproofing materials, methods and application techniques used in construction. The project covers cementitious coatings, crystalline waterproofing, liquid-applied membranes, bituminous sheets and other waterproofing systems. It also explains the importance of surface preparation, crack repair, proper drainage, joint treatment, correct application and ponding tests to ensure effective waterproofing. The study highlights that successful slab waterproofing depends on selecting suitable materials according to site conditions, maintaining good workmanship and following proper quality-control procedures. Regular inspection and timely maintenance are also necessary to prevent leakage and extend the service life of buildings. Proper waterproofing reduces repair expenses, improves structural durability and provides a safe, comfortable and healthy indoor environment. Therefore, slab waterproofing is a vital and cost-effective measure for sustainable and long-lasting construction.
