Harmonics constitute one of the fundamental acoustic mechanisms responsible for the characteristic tonal identity, or timbre, of musical instruments. In string instruments, sound is generated through the vibration of stretched strings that are excited by plucking, bowing, or striking. Although the fundamental frequency primarily determines perceived pitch, the relative amplitudes of higher partials determine much of the perceived tonal quality. This paper examines the generation, distribution, and acoustic significance of harmonics in the violin, guitar, piano, harp, bass and sitar. It considers the ideal mathematical model of a stretched string, the effects of string tension, linear density, stiffness, excitation mechanism, and resonating body, and the distinction between harmonic and inharmonic partials.
