Title

Ecological Crisis, Social Vulnerability and the Politics of Survival in Amitav Ghosh’s The Hungry Tide and Indra Sinha’s Animal’s People

Abstract

This paper offers a comparative reading of Amitav Ghosh’s The Hungry Tide (2004) and Indra Sinha’s Animal’s People (2007), drawing on postcolonial ecocriticism and environmental justice. One novel is set in the ecologically fragile Sundarbans archipelago; the other, in the toxic urban landscape of Khaufpur (a fictionalized depiction of Bhopal). Both examine how environmental degradation, state violence, socio-economic marginalization, and human rights violations intersect. Ghosh portrays conservation-driven displacement during the 1979 Morichjhapi massacre, while Sinha portrays slow violence and corporate impunity following an industrial disaster. Set side by side, these portraits allow this study to demonstrate how subaltern bodies bear the disproportionate burdens of both ecological protectionism and capitalist industrial expansion. Finally, the paper highlights how both texts challenge Western-centric "wilderness" environmentalism by asserting a postcolonial environmental ethic anchored in the lived realities and rights of marginalized communities.
