Reinforcement couplers are mechanical devices used to connect reinforcing steel bars in reinforced concrete structures. They provide an alternative to conventional lap splicing and can improve structural continuity, reduce reinforcement congestion, and optimize the use of reinforcing steel. Various coupler systems are available to accommodate different bar diameters, positional requirements, loading conditions, and construction sequences. This article describes the principal types of reinforcement couplers, their characteristics, applications, and relevant quality assurance considerations. Selection and use of couplers should comply with the approved structural design, applicable standards, and the manufacturer's technical requirements.
