In the 21st century, educational technology has witnessed significant advancements in English language teaching and learning, accompanied by a variety of learning tools. This paper provides a qualitative historical overview of the evolution and integration of novel technological tools into the field of English language teaching and learning from 2000 to the present. Based on the literature review and the researcher's viewpoint, the study categorizes the period of historical development into four main phases. Starting from Computer-Assisted Language Learning tools (CALL), the Web 2.0 and social media era, Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL), to the current landscape of immersive technologies and AI-generated content, and beyond the present. The study examines the pedagogical characteristics of each stage, mentions the famous tools of that period, and traces how technology integration in ELT has evolved and reshaped pedagogical practices over time as well as the challenges associated with every stage. It concludes with an outline of expected future trends in English language teaching and learning.
