In the present study, we focused on a phytochemical screening and antioxidant activity of leaf extract of Guazuma ulmifolia Lam. Collected from Herbal garden, Centre for Biodiversity and Biotechnology (CBB), Palayamkottai, Tamil Nadu, India.The preliminary phytochemical analysis was conducted in ethanol leaf extract by Harborne method. Ethanol leaf extract was screened for possible antioxidant activities by free radical scavenging activity. Free radical scavenging activity was evaluated using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH) free radical and using ascorbic acid as standard antioxidant.The preliminary phytochemical analysis showed the presence of anthocyain, alkaloids, cardiac glycosides, coumarins, flavonoids, phenols, phlobatannins, quinones, saponins, steroid, tannins and terpenoids. Free radical scavenging activity reveals that the Guazuma ulmifolia leaf extracts exhibit great potential for antioxidant activity and may be useful for their nutritional and medicinal functions.
