The brine shrimp (Artemia salina) lethality assay is considered as a useful tool for preliminary assessment of toxicity. In the present work, the phytochemical screening and bioassay of ethanol extract of Strychnos nux-vomica L. have been studied with brine shrimp test. The preliminary phytochemical analysis was evaluated by Harborne method. The results showed the presence of anthocyain, alkaloids, cardiac glycosides, coumarins, flavonoids, phenols, quinones, saponins, steroid, tannins and terpenoids. Different concentrations of ethanol extract were prepared and evaluated for toxicity using Brine Shrimp Lethality assay (BSL). Survivors were counted after 24 h. The data were processed in Probit-analysis program to estimate LC50 values (the concentration at which 50% lethality was observed) with 95% confidence intervals for statistically significant comparisons of potencies. The study confirms the potent cytotoxic activities of leaves extract Strychnos nux-vomica L.
