Title

Crow; Thwarted and Frustrated by Man and by Nature in Ted Hughes “From the Life and Songs of the Crow”

Authors

Abstract

Poetry on birds and animals is not a new idea. Right from Greek and Sanskrit, Poetry on birds and beasts has been considered the Vehicle of transformation. English is no exception to it. Ted Hughes has written the Crow poems, properly known as life and songs of crow. All these poets have used animals or birds as their protagonists. Chaucer sings of many birds in the parliament of fowls”. Blake sings of ‘Tyger’ and other animals but Hughes Sings crow the mythic bird of folklore and legends. Hughes generates and regenerates the themes surround by crow. Hughes is a great nature poet too. Although keenly aware of the tranquil aspects of Nature, he dwells chiefly on her wild, fierce fameless and cruel aspects. He is fascinated by the savagery of Nature though this savagery does not give rise to any feeling in him of a dislike of Nature. Although he feels awed by the cruel side of nature he is yet a great Nature lover. The volume having the title ‘crow’ contains some of Hughe’s most original and most marvelous work. The title of this paper may strike many as something new in English poetry as an innovation. But actually Hughes has skillfully fashioned “crow” out of bits and pieces of some very ancient traditions from both the old world and the New world. Hughes has built up the astonishing figure of crow. So that this character is not many something borrowed from folk literature but an addition to it. Hughes has also thrown some light on his portrayal of the character of the crow in his poem. Hughes explains that this poem records one of crows face to face encounters with the object of his search: the spirit link with his creator. It is an inner link naturally, and the meeting is internal. The hostility and the energy of the frustration between crow and god show the gap between the limited perceptions and ego of crow. It is like the other misfortunes which crow undergoes and the deaths which he dies throughout his adventures.
