Title

THE MOTIFS OF NOSTALGIA, DISPLACEMENT, SILENCE, HOME, MEMORY AND DISCONTINUITIES OF TIME PAST AND TIME PRESENT IN DIASPORA LITERATURE WITH A REFERENCE TO ROMESH GUNESEKERA’S NOVEL “THE SANDGLASS”

Abstract

A Diaspora is a large group of people with a similar heritage or homeland who have since moved out to places all over the world. The term ‘Diaspora’ comes from an ancient Greek word meaning ‘to scatter about’. Diasporic writing in a globalised context has assumed ‘conscious raising genre’ where the concerns are not only about the themes of nostalgia, imaginative reconstruction of the homeland and identities but also about cultural citizenship. This research paper tries to project how Romesh Gunesekera’s second novel, The Sandglass weaves together themes of memory, exile, homelessness, mystery, passage of time, postcolonial upheaval, and silence as portrayed by the main protagonists such as Jason Ducal, Pearl Ducal, Chip and Prins Ducal and other minor characters through various examples and quotes from the novel. Sri Lankan diaspora attempts to reclaim history of homeland and childhood spaces and a conscious attempt to carve out ethnic identity in new society.
