Reality is reflected in literature as it is the effective medium for expressing one’s ideas and thoughts. African literature is a commonwealth literature which focuses on the cultural conflicts in Africa. Like Chinua Achebe, Wole Soyinka is a most distinguishable writer of Nigeria who has portrayed the socio-economic life of African people through his writings. To his credit he holds nearly twenty plays and six novels. The Lion and the Jewel is a trendy play. which has exhibited the traditional life of Yoruba culture. Through the characters of Baroka, Sidi, Sadiku and Lakhunle Soyinka has explored not only the Hindrances in the Traditional Culture but also assimilated the ways of Traditional to Modern World. The paper attempts to delineate the confrontation between the old traditional society and modern westernized world.
