Abstract
The Lowland is different from other writings of Jhumpa Lahiri as displacement and alienation of characters is not caused only by their diasporic dilemma, but also comes from the choices and actions of the characters. The characters experience isolation and alienation which come from an American culture in the initial days after their arrival.
